چکیده

Antiwear additives are added to engine oils in the form of Zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates (ZDDPs). They form an antiwear (bibochemical) film on the rubbing surfaces. High resolution P and S L-edge X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) spectroscopy has been used to characterize the chemical nature of the films formed under air and inert atmosphere. The total electron yield and fluorescence yield detection methods have been employed to investigate the near surface and bulk composition of the films.

The role of the cation in antiwear films formed from ZDDP on 52100 steel

Phosphorus L-edge and oxygen K-edge X-ray PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (XPEEM) have been used to characterize the chemical nature of the cation present in tribochemical films via comparison with model Fe and Zn compounds. The results are contrasted to the P L-edge, P K-edge and S K-edge XANES data. The findings suggest that antiwear pads containing long chain zinc polyphosphate glass are f...

Spatially resolved nanoscale chemical and mechanical characterization of ZDDP antiwear films on aluminum–silicon alloys under cylinder/bore wear conditions

Understanding the lubrication of aluminum–silicon (Al–Si) alloys (>18% Si) under conditions similar to those in the cylinder/bore system is vital to determining their applicability to current engine designs. A novel investigation of the location of zinc-dialkyl-dithiophosphate (ZDDPs) antiwear (AW) film formation on an Al–Si alloy has been performed using X-ray absorption near edge structure (X...

Electronic and bonding structures of B-C-N thin films investigated by x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy

X-ray absorption near-edge structure ~XANES! and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopy ~PES! were used to investigate the electronic and bonding structures of B-C-N thin films. The intensities of the sp-bonded features in the C K-edge XANES spectra are found to generally decrease as the C concentration increases, whereas the intensities of the sp-bonded features in the spectra of N K-edge XAN...

X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy with a superconducting detector for nitrogen dopants in SiC

Fluorescence-yield X-ray absorption fine structure (FY-XAFS) is extensively used for investigating atomic-scale local structures around specific elements in functional materials. However, conventional FY-XAFS instruments frequently cannot cover trace light elements, for example dopants in wide gap semiconductors, because of insufficient energy resolution of semiconductor X-ray detectors. Here w...

X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) Spectroscopy – A Review

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) refers to the details of how X-rays are absorbed by an atom at energies near and above the core-level binding energies of that particular atom. The absorption of X-rays on the high energy side of absorption edges does not vary monotonically in condensed matter but has a complicated behavior which extends past the edge up to about ~1 keV. This non-monotonic va...
